I love action movies/TV shows! I always enjoy watching the James Bond, Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer’s and wonder what it would be like to have the fate of the world on your shoulders. Chasing down the bad guys, and doing it all for the greater good, sounds amazing to me. I have always dreamt about one day getting a mission, like from Mission Impossible, “Brent, this is your mission should you choose to accept it…” And wonder just how I would handle it. All this to say, I often time read scripture in this context, as if God is giving me a mission. Sometimes I will even toss the bible across the room thinking maybe it will explode like in the movies. (It hasn’t happened yet, maybe one day.) I read the Bible picturing the Good fighting Evil and even though the odds are stacked against us, the Good always finds a way to win.
I do have confidence though, that the Bible does give us a mission. I believe that when Jesus left the earth, and told his followers to go make disciples of all nations, that was meant for us as well. If we trust that the Bible is real, which I do, then that means that people who choose to not follow Jesus will spend an eternity apart from Jesus in a place the Bible calls hell. If that is the case, then we have the greatest mission in the entire world. We get to be ambassadors of Jesus Christ. We get to tell people the greatest story in all of history. We get to offer hope to the hopeless, joy to the joyless, peace to the hurting. This is something that we should not take lightly. This is something that we should want to shout from the rooftops, (or modern day example Facebook) that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and if anyone will deny themselves and follow him, that they can know what it is like to be a child of God.
Let me be clear; I do not believe that it is by anything that any of us can do that will save someone. I believe the work of salvation begins and is made complete through the work of God himself. However, I do have faith that he uses willing vessels to carry out his work on this earth. I’m 37 years old, and I have had the great privilege of getting to do some incredible things on this earth, but let me reassure you, nothing in this world compares to being next to someone that surrenders their life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Nothing. There is no joy, no high, no emotion that comes close.
Do you remember the story of Jesus at the well? The disciples left to go pick up food, because they had not eaten in quite some time. When they got back, and offered Jesus food, he declined. His response was that he had food to eat that they knew nothing about. He went on to say that His food was to do the Will of the One who sent him. When we get to do the Will of the One who has saved us and sent us out, nothing else will ever satisfy the same. When we get to play a part in the will of the Father, nothing else seems to matter.
I urge each of you, you have a mission, should you choose to accept it, that will lead others and yourself to the greatest feeling of accomplishment and worth that this world has to offer. Love your neighbor, your coworker, your family members, and never be afraid to share of the work that God has done in your life. Jesus says, the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few, so I pray that God will send us out to be his hands and feet in our circle of this earth.
